Parkinson Disease Treatment

Parkinson disease treatment requires management from several different areas of life, including patient support, exercise, nutrition, medication, surgery and more.  Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for Parkinson disease, but new research is being done all the time, and the outlook is hopeful, with new non-FDA approved Parkinson disease treatment options already available.

The most common method of Parkinson disease treatment is medication, specifically in the form of L-dopa.  For more information on the medication options, visit our Parkinson’s medication page.

Parkinson disease treatment through surgery was once common place, but since the discovery of effective medication, surgery is now quite rare; although, vast improvements in surgical techniques has led to a increase in surgical treatment for patients in advanced stages.  Deep brain stimulation is the most common surgical treatment, however there are other surgical therapies available.

Other non-medical options for Parkinson disease treatment include speech therapy and physical exercise.  These options assist patients in maintaining their quality of life, but do not directly treat the disorder.

Parkinson disease treatment options currently under investigation are:  gene therapy, neuroprotective treatment, neural transplantation, and nutrients.  As well, new research has shown promise in the use of Botox for Parkinson disease treatment.  Talk to your doctor about alternative treatment, and if you are truly interested, you may be able to become part of experimental trials, which could put you at the forefront of a potential cure.

Early stages, and mild symptoms of the condition are manageable and do not usually require medication or treatment; however, advanced stages of the disorder are quite unbearable, which is why Parkinson’s disease treatment will continue to be an ongoing initiative, until hopefully, one day a cure is discovered.
